Mequon won't hold its Winter Wonderland outside City Hall this December. In early 2026, the city's Festivals Committee voted to pause the event for the year. It also paused the spring Redbud festival. The committee hasn't named a holiday event to replace it.
That leaves a gap in the calendar. The pieces that used to fill it haven't disappeared, though. They've moved into one stretch running from Friday evening, December 4, through Saturday night, December 5. Most of it happens a short way down the road in Thiensville, and a few events overlap enough that you'll want a plan before the weekend arrives.
The last Winter Wonderland was on Sunday, December 7, 2025, in front of Mequon City Hall on Cedarburg Road. According to the City of Mequon's festivals page, it had horse-drawn carriage rides, Santa Claus, free hot cocoa, a tree lighting, and holiday music from three local choirs. That's a lot to fit into one afternoon. For 2026, the same page says the committee is working to "re-imagine" events that complement Taste of Mequon, partnering with local organizations and businesses. Its first new idea was a free movie night on June 26.
This is where each part of last year's event shows up this December, based on what's been posted so far:
| Winter Wonderland 2025 | Where it appears in 2026 | When |
|---|---|---|
| Tree lighting | Thiensville Village Christmas Tree Lighting, Walgreens lot at N. Main St. & Freistadt Rd. | Fri., Dec. 4, 6–7 p.m. |
| Santa Claus | Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on a Fire Department truck at the Thiensville tree lighting | Fri., Dec. 4 |
| Free hot cocoa | Hot chocolate and refreshments at the Thiensville tree lighting | Fri., Dec. 4 |
| Holiday music from local choirs | Christmas at Concordia, Chapel of Christ Triumphant, Concordia University Wisconsin | Fri., Dec. 4 and Sat., Dec. 5, 7:30–9 p.m. |
| Horse-drawn carriage rides | No 2026 listing found | — |
Each of those pieces now lands within about 27 hours of the others. The two Saturday markets also fall in that window.
Friday starts with the Thiensville Village Christmas Tree Lighting, 6 to 7 p.m. Downtown Thiensville's calendar lists 250 Elm Street as the address, but the event description puts the lighting in the Walgreens parking lot at the corner of N. Main Street and Freistadt Road. The program includes hot chocolate and refreshments, holiday carols, a coloring contest, and Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving on a Fire Department truck.
The tree lighting does a second job. If you've pre-ordered a box for Saturday's Thiensville Cookie Walk, you pick up the empty box and the list of cookie stops here, between 6 and 7 p.m. Miss Friday and you'll start Saturday without your box or your map.
The first of two performances of Christmas at Concordia starts half an hour after the tree lighting ends, at 7:30 p.m. It runs until 9 in the Chapel of Christ Triumphant on the Concordia University Wisconsin campus, 12800 North Lake Shore Drive. The university bills it as an annual tradition with every one of its instrumental, vocal, and handbell ensembles: Kammerchor, Selah, Chapel Choir, Civic Chorale, Alleluia Ringers, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, University Band, Jazz Ensemble, and String Ensemble. There's also some audience hymn singing.
So Friday works as one evening with two stops: lights and Santa in Thiensville, then music on the lakeshore campus.
Saturday is the tighter day. Two events run in the same window on opposite sides of the city line.
The Thiensville Cookie Walk runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "throughout Thiensville." You go from stop to stop, all of them Thiensville businesses, collecting cookies until you've filled a box of 16 gourmet holiday-themed cookies.
The Mequon Winter Craft Fair at the Mequon Public Market, 6300 W. Mequon Road, is listed for the same Saturday. A third-party event listing gives the hours as 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and calls it the fourth annual fair, with more than 20 vendors. The market's own homepage shows "Saturday, December 5th" but no year. December 5 does fall on a Saturday in 2026, but check the market's posting before you go.
Both events start and end at the same times, so doing both takes some planning. Here's one way to order the day:
That's five events in one weekend, each run by a different host: Downtown Thiensville, Concordia University Wisconsin, and the Mequon Public Market.
A compressed weekend means most of the planning happens in November. These are the dates that matter between now and then:
Thiensville's fall season starts before December, too. Nightmare on Elm Street runs Thursday, October 29, from 4 to 7 p.m., with trick-or-treating at village businesses followed by food trucks, games, and entertainment in Thiensville Village Park. Mequon's citywide trick-or-treat is Saturday, October 31, starting at 4 p.m.
Last December also had the Foxtown Winter Market at Foxtown Station, 6209 W. Mequon Road. The Foxtown listing is for Saturday, December 6, 2025, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., free admission. No 2026 date has been posted so far. If it comes back for 2026, it would give the Mequon side of the line another stop. Until a new listing goes up, last year's date doesn't tell you anything about this year.
The City's festivals page also leaves room for something new. The Festivals Committee says it's partnering with local organizations and businesses on new events, and so far the only one it has named is the June movie night at Rennicke Field. About 200 people brought chairs and blankets to the outfield behind City Hall for that one. Neither the City nor any news coverage we found has said why Winter Wonderland was paused, or whether it returns in 2027.
For now, the confirmed Mequon-area holiday calendar is the Friday tree lighting in Thiensville, two nights of Christmas at Concordia, and a Saturday shared by the Cookie Walk and the Public Market craft fair.
I live and work up the road in Cedarburg, and I keep track of North Shore calendars like this one because these weekends are a big part of why people love living here.
